Fort Cochin was the first township in the British commonwealth. Located on the shores of the Arabian sea, Fort Cochin is a community of centuries old colonial buildings and churches. Characterized by its fusion of Indian and European lifestyles. In this heritage community, with its air of genteel decay, history is a friendly phantom that still stalks the evening mist of its seaside streets.
As you walk past garden walls of cascading bougainvillea and jasmine, or under flowering shade tree, or dodge the sticky sap from the cashew trees along the streets…. you can imagine you running into Vasco De Gama, who founded the European settlement here at the end of his global voyage of discovery.
The Portuguese, Dutch and British left their imprint on Fort Cochin. Over a morning coffee on our rooftop, you can gaze at the graceful arches of St. Francis Church just across the road. Over the settlement’s tiled roofs, or onto Da Gama’s backyard next door.
